Oh, hi.
I’m Alex, and I write books for teenagers.
My first book, WISH, was published by Scholastic in January of 2010.
My second book, WISHFUL THINKING, also published by Scholastic, will be out was published in January of 2011.
My third book, TUMBLE & FALL, will be published by Farrar, Strauss, and Giroux, Fall 2013, under my NEW MARRIED NAME Alexandra Coutts!!
I really hope you like them.
Here is my not-so-official official bio, the one that’s in the books I really hope you like:
“Alexandra Bullen Coutts has been a playwright, waitress, barista, gardener, script reader, yoga instructor and personal assistant. She grew up in Massachusetts, went to college in New York City, and lives most of the year full time on Martha’s Vineyard.”
I also have two dogs and one boyfriend husband and one brand new baby girl, Evie Lee.
This is what they look like driving:
(Minus the baby. Babies don’t drive.)
They live with me on an island called Martha’s Vineyard.
Even in the winter.
Here is why:

Hi Alex, I’m just curious to whether you think it is strange if a 27 year old man like myself wants to read your book? My roomy (my mom) says it’s peculiar, but I don’t. Tell Me What you think. Thanks.

Hi Jeremy,
Yes.
Also, I’ve seen your mom, and she is not roomy.

Alex! A little birdie (okay, Carrie N.) recently told me about a certain New Yorker article that mentioned your name. One Google search later, and here I am. Many congrats on the novel! Would love to catch up or grab coffee next time you’re in NYC…

Dear Alexandra Bullen,
Quite simply, your book has inspired me. It has deeply motivated me to write from the heart, and in detail. My name is Jill D., and I am a seventh grader at Hillsborough Middle School. I absolutely love reading, writing, and my literacy teacher, Miss. Shaheen, makes it even more fun. I am also a Girl Scout who loves to play tennis, read, and write in my leisure time. I have a passion for music, dancing, drawing, and fashion, as well. Your book was very entertaining and enjoyable. The amount of detail you put in every page was mind blowing. The way you describe every little thing was phenomenal. I absolutely loved the amount of attraction between Soren and Olivia. What was also well written, was the ending because Calla had forgiven Olivia for being with Soren, instead of holding a grudge. The fact that Violet did leave Olivia, but then had a chance to say goodbye to her, was perfect. I admire your writing deeply. Your book was one of the few that has ever made me cry.
When Olivia had accidentally wished Violet to leave, I was flabbergasted. I did not see it coming that harshly. This part in the book really made me emotional because I knew how much Olivia regretted making that one wish. At that moment, and on that note, it was really shocking.
The more I looked between the lines of Wish, the more questions I stumbled upon. First of all, were Soren and Calla intended to be serious in the first place? It had seemed as though Calla thought it was, and Soren thought they were casually dating. However, I was not one hundred percent sure. Secondly, if Olivia wasn’t so distracted with the fashion show, would she have convinced her mother to not sell her grandfather’s yacht? Olivia and Violet were so upset that the yacht was going to be sold and I thought that, with Violet’s help, Olivia would have talked her mom out of selling it. Also, on page 247, Calla says that Olivia is a “True Blue” (Bullen 247). What is “True Blue” supposed to mean? Is True Blue the name of a group? As far as the outcome of the book, who inspired you to write Wish? Where did you get the idea of magical dresses? Your book was one of my favorites, and I would really like to know more about your thoughts about the book.
Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. I would really appreciate it if you would write back to me at ashaheen@hillsborough.k12.nj.us. Wish had, and will continue to have, quite an impact on me. The questions that I wrote above will continue to float in my mind until they are answered. I would be very happy if you would reply to my letter. Once again, thank you. I hope to hear from you .
Sincerely,
Jill D.

Alex, I really loved both Wish and Wishful Thinking. I have a nookcolor and lent Wish to my friend and she loved it too. Will there be a third book Installment? I really hope there is. I found both stories severly touching and you obviously know how to write with great emorion intended and shown. I’ve read bith books twice, whiich I have only dobe with 2 other books aside from these. I cried while reading both these books and cannot wait to read more of your books. You are an amazing writer and hopefully your career will set off. Congrats on publishing Wish and Wishful Thinking by Scholastic. I want to be an author one day. Hopefully my dream will come true, just as yours did in your career if writing.

I bought the Kindle version of your book and just finished reading it. It was a fantastic book! I will now purchase your next book and hope to enjoy it as much. I found your book to be very well written and refreshing. No foul language or inappropriate situations, well done!! To be quite honest, I am a mid 30’s single mom of a teenager, NOT a teenager myself.

Thanks for the note, Bec! So happy to hear you enjoyed Wish. I just got a note on facebook from a grandmother who said she loved the books, too!

Hi! I’m a 7th grader from New Jersey. I read your book, “Wish” and really loved it. I decided to use it for one of my Language Arts Projects! In my Project, there are some questions which required me to do research about the author so I wanted to ask you directly!
1. Who or what inspired you to write”Wish”?
2. Where did you get the idea of magical dresses and butterflies that grant you a wish?
3. What was in your mind (what were you thinking about) while writing “Wish”?
I know you must be really busy but can you please reply ASAP because my project is due in a couple of weeks.
Thanks so much!!!!!!

Hi!
I was using your book for a project and I need to know the setting of the story. I could not think of a specific setting (like forest, school, home, specific places like that) and I also wanted to know if your story took place in modern time or the future or the past. Please reply ASAP!!
Thank you so much!
Sanjana
PS- I love your books!

I don’t know what to say….
Well you are my favourite author though I have just read one book of yours – wishful thinking. And I feel that it is magical. I mean I remember when I read it my mom noticed me and she said you cried, laughed, smiled and put on every expression while reading the book. It’s my personal favourite.
I wish , actully I dream that one day I would purchase the rights of your book and would definitely make a movie on it because I want o show the world how great it is!
Well I am an Indian and live in India but I like reading non-Indian authors (don’t know why!).
I got your book from a scholastic book fair that was there in my school!
I would say keep writing these awesome books!
Umm…and …thank you if you read my comment!
Yours truly
A fan ( Indian) in a million,
